Citizens Advice’s calls to protect those in the shielded group have been featured on the ITV Evening News, and coverage of the Scams Awareness campaign continues.



Average ‘shielding’ worker has lost £1,400 during coronavirus lockdown, figures reveal, 19/06/2020

Citizens Advice found workers who are shielding at home have, on average, lost £1,400 since the start of lockdown.

Principal Policy Manager Morgan Wild spoke to ITV Evening News about the “impossible choice” facing many who are shielding. (Clip starts 18:24)


Hot tub scams: Watch out for dodgy listings and payment requests

The Daily Mail has reported that the number of people caught out in purchase scams when trying to buy hot tubs increased five-fold in May compared to the month before.

It included a warning from Dame Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice.
She said: ” ‘We’ve seen thousands of people coming to our website for advice on scams during the coronavirus outbreak as opportunistic scammers take advantage of the public’s concerns.

“Worryingly one in three of us has been targeted by a scam since lockdown began. This shows it’s really important we all do our bit and report them when we see them.”

One in three Brits targeted by a scammer so far during lockdown

Over a third of British adults (36%) have been the target of a scam since lockdown began, new research by Citizens Advice reveals.

Following the latest ONS employment release, Citizens Advice is warning of a surge in demand for redundancy advice.

In the latest press release, Dame Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: “In a heartbreaking sign of our times, our frontline advisers are helping one person every two minutes with a redundancy issue.”

Citizens Advice Rural Cambs featured on BBC Cambridgeshire (clip starts 00:43) and Wiltshire Citizens Advice featured on BBC Wiltshire (0:14) following the announcement.

The warning was also highlighted in Bude and Beyond and Slough and Langley Observer.

Sky News presenter Sophy Ridge quoted Citizens Advice’s research on the shielded group when interviewing Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

She said government guidance says if you’re told to shield after 10 June you can’t be furloughed, unless you’ve been furloughed before. She said: “Citizens Advice estimates over 70% of those shielding haven’t previously been furloughed, so these people may have to choose between following the advice or keeping their jobs.”

The issue was also highlighted by The Sun, which quoted Citizens Advice.

Dame Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: “It’s hugely disappointing that the Prime Minister seems to have backtracked on his promise to address the furlough cliff edge for those shielding.

“Without urgent changes, many people who are extremely vulnerable to coronavirus will face an impossible choice: paying the bills or protecting their health.”

The NHS test-and-trace system risks failing to contain future outbreaks unless those told to self-isolate are given urgent financial aid, the government is being warned by its own MPs and advisers.

Dame Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: “The government has taken bold steps to help many workers throughout the coronavirus crisis, but it needs to look again at how it can support people to do the right thing.”
