Be Alert to Scams as Self Assessment Deadline Approaches
As the 31 January 2025 Self Assessment deadline nears, HMRC is warning taxpayers to stay vigilant against scams and fraudulent communications.
Key Facts:
Nearly 150,000 scams reported to HMRC in the past year, a 16.7% increase from the previous 12 months.
71,832 reports of fake tax rebate scams, accounting for around half of all scam referrals.
Fraudsters are targeting individuals with fake offers of tax refunds or urgent demands for payment to steal personal and banking details.
Recognise Scams:
HMRC will never contact you via email, text, or phone to announce a refund or ask for personal/financial information.
Voicemails threatening legal action or arrest are not genuine and are used by criminals to scare victims.
Caller ID cannot always be trusted as numbers can be spoofed.
Stay Safe:
Visit GOV.UK's HMRC scams advice page to verify communications.
Report suspicious emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk or forward texts to 60599.
Use secure HMRC services, such as your online account or the HMRC app, to manage your taxes safely.
HMRC Advice:
Kelly Paterson, Chief Security Officer at HMRC, emphasises:
“Stay vigilant. Don’t rush. Check HMRC scams advice on GOV.UK to avoid falling victim. Reporting suspicious messages helps protect you and others.”
Additional Tips:
Protect your personal details by using strong, unique passwords for all accounts.
Recognise suspicious messages by avoiding links or downloads from unknown sources.
Report any financial losses to Action Fraud or police (101 in Scotland).
