Beware Scam Calls: Fraudsters Exploiting Digital Landline Switchover

Scammers are impersonating BT and preying on consumers ahead of the UK's digital landline switchover. Victims report receiving cold calls demanding payment or personal details under the guise of upgrading their landline service to "Digital Voice." Here’s what you need to know:

The Scam in Action

  • Claims: Fraudsters warn victims they’ll lose their landline or internet connection if they don’t act immediately.

  • Pressure Tactics: Victims are told to pay fees on the spot or face disconnection.

  • Fake Knowledge: Scammers may know your name and address, making their claims seem credible.

  • Targets: Even people without landlines have received similar fraudulent calls on their mobiles.

What’s Really Happening

  • The UK’s landline network is transitioning to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also called Digital Voice.

  • The original 2025 deadline for the upgrade has been extended to 2027.

  • Your landline provider will notify you in writing about any changes and will offer support if needed.

  • No fees or payment verification are required for the switch.

Protect Yourself from Scam Calls

  1. Be Skeptical: Treat unsolicited calls with caution, even if the caller ID looks legitimate.

  2. No Personal Details: Never share sensitive information like payment details or passwords over the phone.

  3. Avoid Pressure: Legitimate organisations will never threaten or rush you into making decisions.

  4. Block Unwanted Calls: Use call-blocking services or devices to filter out unknown numbers.

  5. Register: Sign up with the Telephone Preference Service to reduce marketing calls.

If You’ve Been Scammed

  • Contact Your Bank: Report the incident immediately to secure your accounts and explore potential refunds.

  • Report the Scam: Contact Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040 or online.

  • Verify Calls: If in doubt, hang up and contact the official customer service of the organisation directly.

Stay Safe

The digital switchover is a necessary upgrade, but scammers are taking advantage of the changes to deceive people. By staying vigilant and informed, you can protect yourself and others from falling victim. Share this information to help spread awareness and combat fraud!
