Shocking Statistics: Nearly Half of Private Renters Endure Damp and Mould, Even in Summer
New figures reveal a concerning trend: almost half of private renters in England are living in homes plagued by damp, mould, or excessive cold, even during the summer months. At Citizens Advice we conducted a survey that found 45% of private renters are dealing with these uncomfortable and unhealthy conditions.
More alarmingly, the research highlighted that 48% of these households have been enduring such disrepair for over a year. This ongoing issue significantly impacts the well-being and quality of life for many renters.
As property website Rightmove reports, the average rent outside of London has surged to a record high of £1,314 per month, making it even more challenging for tenants to find suitable and affordable housing.
Furthermore, the charity's data indicates that private renters on low wages are expected to spend a staggering 53% of their income on energy and housing costs this year. In comparison, those living in social housing spend 46%, while homeowners allocate 40% of their income to these expenses.
These statistics paint a stark picture of the current housing crisis facing private renters, underscoring the urgent need for improved living conditions and more affordable housing options.
